Nana's Story.

It’s all about robots. Japanese for some reason are into this.” And then in November 2011, I randomly typed in “Cute Anime Boys” LOLOL. It was a school holiday so what else was I supposed to do right? And one of them was Naota.

It was a picture of him in Episode 1 with the towel around his neck as he enters his room and sees Haruko. I was like “Goddamn this art is good. And the title is ‘FoolyCooly’ or ‘FLCL’?

Okay that’s pretty cool. K yairi guitars serial numbers. Gotta check this out.” I gave it a go.

I thought this was going to be a great slice of life anime. I was already picturing his older brother returning and more drama arises. But then, that famous manga scene appeared, and it was too much for me to handle. My Japanese was even weaker than now, and they were speaking so fast and about topics I was not too familiar with. I finally gave up right there. I thought to myself, “Oh, this isn’t a serious anime after all.

It was just a prank in the beginning.” But I still couldn’t stop thinking about Naota. I really like his appearance and personality and voice. But instead of rewatching, I decided to just google up his images a couple of months later. And then I saw that one picture of him (oh what an idiot I can just add his picture here yeah WordPress allows you to add media not just on the top) of him with his hoodie on smiling cheekily. Now I know Naota isn’t that sort of person.

He’s an overly serious, rather stuck up and somewhat sadistic kiddo. He’s NEVER acted this way. Just what happened to make him like this? I got curious. I wanted to know more.

But since that manga scene was too much for my brain to process, I decided to watch the anime backwards, yes, starting with the final episode. And what a joke another manga scene? “What the shit was I here? I thought I watched episode 1 before? Ah man don’t tell me there is a freaking manga scene every damn episode.

Episode

But wait a second, it’s a bit different. Ohhhh okay~ Now that I think about it I know certain animes that use the same technique. The first and last episodes ‘share the same scenes.’ ” But then I heard the song “Funny Bunny” when this title screen came, and guys.

That song was stuck in my head for a year straight. I wouldn’t shut up about it with almost everybody I meet. I started recommending the anime to everybody. But a friend said “Why do you like weird animes?” That was kinda unexpected. But now that I think about it wasn’t my first reaction the same way? Anyhow I started enjoying every single one of the 25 songs within FLCL, and the ones outside the anime. I just wanted more to quench this thirst.

And that was when my primary school friend and I got reunited, “I have never watched the anime, but since I love The Pillows, I’ll give it a go. I love One Life.” And I was like dude that’s the first song they play in the anime check it out.

But what really made me feel connected to the show is because I relate with Mamimi a lot till today, and even more back then. I felt the same way as her when she got upset Naota swung the bat. I usually don’t discuss my feelings and just try to figure them out myself with the help of the Internet. As a teenager I thought I was the only one in the world feeling that awful. So when I discovered Mamimi, I felt a sense of comfort of not being the only one. But I still didn’t understand the compact storyline.

I just enjoyed the audio and visual content. Despite finally completing the anime, I still did not get the message. In fact, I always wondered why Naota went for Haruko over Mamimi. “I guess this is a nonsensical anime after all so Naota’s tastes is also rather questionable.” Yes, can you believe I once thought this immaturely? But like in early 2013 I freaking saw them selling FLCL Poker Cards in some random anime shop called “Comics Connection” in a nearby mall in Singapore for just 5 dollars. And I got confused with the images on the cards. Stuffs like Naota holding onto a white guitar.

Like where in the world did that come from? Isn’t it supposed to be blue? (Yes, I thought it was Haruko’s bass and I call myself a fan) I even thought it was either printing error or they intentionally coloured it differently since they’re just poker cards. I wasn’t paying much attention to the hidden images throughout the show.
