Veteran yet active, popular film and TV actor Neeraj Bharadwaj, is still going strong, the versatile actor has bagged a negative role in the daily telly soap 'Bandhan Kachche Dhaagon Ka' which is aired on DD National. He had an exclusive candid conversation with The Afternoon D & C. What attracted you to a negative role in TV show 'Bandhan Kachche.' Director, Manoj Singh, wanted me to use my years of experience as an actor to ‘reinvent’ my persona.
As suggested by him, I accepted the role of 'Indrajit', the cousin brother of the family, who, in order to amass wealth is prepared to go to any extent. My negative character is so bad that the viewers have begun hating me for portrayal of that role. What about your roles in previous TV serials?

I acted in 'Saath Nibhana Saathiya', a women-oriented TV serial telecast on Star Plus. In this longest show, I played a character of Chirag Modi. I also acted in 'Hum Tumko Na Bhul Payenge' and 'Ehsaas - Kahani Ek Ghar Ki' and 'Tara' (Zee TV). After your slick performance in ‘Saath Nibhana’ how has your journey been? It was full of ups and downs because I always prefer only performance-oriented major roles.
Your comments about the ‘casting’ in TV serials these days? These days, only female characters are given importance in most TV serials. Men are reduced to being just space-fillers. After all, how can an actor get satisfaction, if he does not get to perform meaty roles?

Incidentally, when did you enter films? I came to Mumbai in 1998 and the very next year I got a break in a Hindi film. I have played lead roles in nearly 11 films, including 'Premshastra' and 'Taqdeer Ka Sikander'. Subsequently I switched on to the small screen.
So it was a reverse ‘Detour’, in your case isn’t it? Most artistes usually switch over from TV serials to films. In my case it was a reverse situation.
I acted in films first and then joined TV serials. But even today my main interest remains with the films.
What’s next in the offing? As an actor, I have signed three Hindi films and a film each in South and Marathi languages. They include 'Wafaa 2', a Hindi and this Marathi remake of 'Wafaa: A Deadly Love Story' (a 2008 Bollywood movie staring Rajesh Khanna and Laila Khan). Do you recall any memorable shooting experience? In the film 'Taqdeer Ka Sikander’ (2002), there was a mock-fight scene between veteran rugged actor Dharmendra and me. During the fight, Dharmendra accidentally hit me hard.
He was very apologetic about the incident. But I secretly felt so thrilled, to be hit by such a towering, iconic personality.
Will you also be jumping on the production-direction bandwagon? Over the last few years there have been many major changes. Changes bring in evolution and progress. Although I am in favour of changes, I am not interested in climbing onto the production-direction bandwagon.
I am an actor and will always remain an actor. Like many of your actor-colleagues will you also be joining politics? I propose to join politics in 2022. I strongly believe in astrology and feel that the planets and the star signs influence one’s life. Let’s hope for the best.
