It was relatively difficult for me to read it, but definitely doable, and I improved a lot after I read all 11 volumes. I then started looking for a new manga to read in Japanese.
I tried Shinryaku! Ika Musume, and found that it was too difficult. I also tried Doraemon, but that one does not have furigana. I only know about 300 kanji, which turned out to be insufficient, and I was spending way too much time in my kanji dictionary.

As such, I'd recommend looking at shonen or shojo manga set in whole or in part in reality. What makes よつばと so great is that it's a slice of life story. It's casual and introduces vocabulary you might actually use day to day.
